The Escalante Canyons Plein Air Arts Festival holds a one-day “Paint-Out”, where each artist must complete their painting in one day, painting outside in a general area, this time within a few miles of the community center. Early that morning, after getting my paper stamped, I drove around town looking for a shady spot and a subject I could get into. Finally I found this riding arena. Everything looked like it had been left where last used, yet the spirit of what goes on there was palpable. The sign, “Ride at your own Risk” summed it all up, as I imagined devious courses that the ATV would take to try to foil a kid on the horse trying to rope the tin-covered wooden bull on skiis.
To paint this image, I used pen and ink with watercolorwash as a whimsical technique to complement the subject.
